Gender Roles

-by Shuchita Shukla

The sociological concept of ‘Gender Roles’ has been evident in our society since ages. Look around and you are bound to notice this orthodox practice.

Gender roles are basically the expectations of behaviour, attitude, and actions that society has from a certain type of gender. For example, let’s look at the smallest of things that encompass the gender roles which are often ignored in the name of normalcy.

Females are expected to behave in a certain way. They are expected to be shy and obedient. There is immense pain in society if it comes across a woman who isn’t afraid to voice her opinion. We are living in the 21st century and yet, the mentality of people hasn’t changed 360 degrees. There is so much that has to be done in order to give liberty to women. Similarly, men are also expected to behave in a certain way. They are expected to be brave at all times. A crying man is unacceptable to society. Men have been living under the pressure to show a tough exterior that doesn’t get upset or anxious. Men cannot even cry as it is considered a shame as per gender roles. This takes a toll on their mental health.

Society has also prescribed gender roles related to cooking. Yes, you read that right. This basic life skill is stereotyped to be meant only for women.

Women are always expected to know A-Z of cooking. However, if a man enjoys cooking, he is described as a man who should have been a woman. Society pressurises every woman to learn all the areas of cooking and mocks if the same is done by a man.

Thereby, it can be said that gender roles have been playing a major role in our society and affecting all dimensions present around us.
